I think you basically remember what you think is important. And school can be a great place to teach you about important things you will probably not pick up at home. If only a fraction of that is permanently added to students lives, it's still a valuable exercise. Of course education is not a constant thing, it keeps changing through time and it sounds like it could be improved. Anyhow I'm personally very happy with the things I've learned in school and the friends I've made there. Sorry to hear about people apparently finding it completely useless.
