Apple can save itself from irrelevance, but Tim Cook's not going to like it

The article says Apple has lost touch with their customers, and that's true - they no longer seem to remember who their customers are: Creatives. People working with video, audio, photos, blogs, vlogs, podcasts, web front-ends - these are the people Apple needs to cater to. Apple should have customer personas defined for each of these areas and continually asking the question: what are their current needs and what hardware/software would better serve them? Provide a migration path from beginner to expert. Show it. Sure, every now and then you can create a new market out of left field like they did with the Apple Watch and its focus on health. Who knows, maybe they'll figure out a use for the VR headset as well. But they'd better not be taking their eye off their core market while pursuing these market expanders.

I they took 100% of that market, what fraction of the larger market for desktops, laptops or smartphones would that be? It wouldn’t surprise me at all if that’s less than half of their current market share in laptops, and less than a tenth of that of smartphones. If that’s true, why would they focus on that much smaller market?

If they have good tools for beginners, prosumers, and pros, then they'll have a market vastly exceeding just the pros - and their competitors simply won't be able to compete. A typical software behemoth trying to create tools for creative purposes? That's mostly a fail! Don't forget, focusing on creatives is the strategy that made Apple what it is today.
