Iowa Prohibits UBI
- codingdave 2y agoThe title is misleading. This prohibits it at any level lower than the state level. The state itself can still do it, or grant permission for a city/county to do it. I don't know the history of this, so I am unclear whether it is anti-UBI, or just wanting to legislate that if it happens, it will be a state-level effort.
- bell-cot 2y agoIANAL - but from a quick skim, it sounds like cities & counties are the only entities prohibited from running UBI programs. And "UBI" seem to be defined tightly enough so that a "close enough" program could still be legal. My guess is that this is 100% performative politics. Local governments in America are not awash in the kind of money you'd need to run any sort of sustained, at-scale UBI program.
- beardyw 2y agoAs I understand it the federal government collects income tax which which would go hand in glove with UBI. So surely UBI would be distributed through that channel wouldn't it? If everyone in the USA got UBI except the citizens of Iowa, I think they might change the law?
