Police Are Getting Around Legally Banned Facial Recognition
- incomingpain 2y agoWhen police get banned from doing something; and it's not connected to an inherent right. They will always continue to do it. Hell, they even demand to see your papers and will force their way into your house without a warrant. Snowden revealed that Canada has the same level of surveillance like the NSA. It has since been proven to me real. But Canada has legislation that you can't be put under surveillance without a warrant. We have the same search civil rights as well. So why would the police do this? Nothing is admissible in court. But they at least do have the information that might give them opportunity to investigate further? Same goes here, facial recog is awful, but they will still do it and perhaps the information just never gets shared.
- bell-cot 2y agoUm, yes? Law enforcement folks have been getting around all sorts of nice-words-on-paper rules for thousands of years. Anybody who's worked retail knows that "but the rule book says!" won't magically stop employees from breaking the rules. You have to have actual supervision, and a competent management structure that cares about the rules actually being followed. But if the employees are "police", most people's brains go into Santa Claus mode - where mere reality is no match for their Will To Believe that no policeman could ever be on the Naughty list, and flying reindeer prevent Bad Things from ever happening, and that they'll never-ever-ever need to pay attention to what's really going on in that wonderful elven toy factory at the North Pole.
