This line alone makes me completely discredit the entire post.
A. There was no “big show” made. It wasn’t the headlining feature in either the release notes nor the post-install popup. People here on HN and probably on other social media made a big deal about it but iTerm2 itself did not.
B. You can change the OpenAI API endpoint to point to ollama or some other local OpenAI-compatible API (aka every major local LLM tool has this)
People are up in arms over an opt-in feature and it’s frankly embarrassing. On top of that, the feature is pretty shit IMHO.
You can’t undo/redo in the popup, it has no history, it wouldn’t paste the result of the command into my terminal (I had to do it manually), no way to retrieve the command again after closing the popup, and no way to alter the command if there was a problem. Using ChatGPT is still a way better experience.
Lastly, all the “I’m switching away from iTerm2!” comments/posts are just crazy. I mean, I guess I wish I had nothing better or more important to do in my life than go looking for a terminal replacement (a central and hugely important tool I use many times every day to do my job) just because it added a feature I don’t want to use and don’t have to use… Did all those users get up in arms about the tmux support if they don’t use tmux? Or any other of the vast config options iTerm2 has? I just don’t get it, people are being so irrational about this.
