Based on a coerced confession (later recanted), US agents captured Zubaydah in Pakistan in 2002. Despite initially describing him as "a near-ideal candidate for a tribunal trial," they instead held him in secret CIA prisons and tortured him with methods that were in clear violation of international law. (Later, Congress authorized these "enhanced interrogation techniques.")
Zubaydah provided three "key pieces" of evidence to CIA interrogators, which was used as justification for the torture they inflicted upon him. It was later revealed that all three pieces were given prior to the torture being inflicted.
While the worst of his torture occurred prior to his transfer to Guantanamo Bay, he remains there in captivity - with no trial, transfer, or case review planned. He is 53 years old, and has spent the last 22 years of his life like this.
