I had an irrigation guy try to sell me on the "continuous" pump setups. While you minimize some of the internal infrastructure - I agree with your take. The continuous system puts a ton more strain on the pump. The other piece is lift - even at 70 psi water pressure diminishes quite a bit if you're traveling three floors (basement, 1st, 2nd). Definitely sad.
