Sweden raises sexual assault charges against him a few weeks later. He flees to UK and seeks asylum at the Ecuador embassy, on grounds of being afraid that the charges were a false pretense to get him extradited to the US on charges of espionage. The US claimed it was false and there was no intention to get him extradited to the US. He then get kicked out of the embassy, and put in UK jail. Sweden then drops the charges. US then charges him with espionage and request that he should be extradited to the US. Decades later and the court battles continues. His health deteriorate to the point where UN special rapporteur on torture request that the whole affair need to end.
