Julian Assange granted permission to appeal extradition
- phyalow 2y agoA small victory. I truly hope Assange is released from custody as a free man soon.
- squarefoot 2y ago+1. The guy has already suffered well beyond any reasonable limit; no need to rage on him just to make a point.
- Log_out_ 2y agoBonus points: he gets to high five blair and bush on the way in.. We are better than them even when it comes to usVsThem..
- SideburnsOfDoom 2y agoI hope that the USA decides not to prosecute Mr Assange on this matter of "Espionage charges relating to the publication of thousands of classified and diplomatic documents", which dates back to before the Biden administration. This is not a broader comment either way; on Mr Assange's character or his culpability on any other changes. Be he a hero or a garbage person, it seems better to drop this charge. It is important to separate this and not reduce it to "Assange good" or "Assange bad". That should be irrelevant to the decision of this legal case.
- pestatije 2y agobut he could (id say he almost surely would) reoffend...for the US the most important thing is to keep the guy shut
- lbhdc 2y agoWhy do you feel they should drop the charges? Edit: I get that people feel strongly about this, but I am genuinely curious :)
- SideburnsOfDoom 2y agoThe disclosure was in the public interest. I'm trying to avoid the strong feelings pro and con the person.

- digitalPhonix 2y agoFrom the US response, there's this quote: > 13. Even if nationality and citizenship are meant to be synonymous terms under the 2003 Act Act, - and we submit that they are not - ... What does that mean? As a non-american nationality and citizenship are synonymous to me. What is the difference?
- skilled 2y agoYeah this was brought up in court yesterday a lot. I can’t answer your question directly but the US was being a slime all the way through with the wording of the two. Here is a Twitter thread that shows the live recap of what was said in court: https://x.com/richimedhurst/status/1792493027421720840 https://x.com/richimedhurst/status/1792493027421720840 https://nitter.poast.org/richimedhurst/status/1792493027421720840 https://nitter.poast.org/richimedhurst/status/17924930274217...

- belorn 2y agoIn a decade or so when people who was not even born when all this happen read this story, will they believe any of it? A guy publish a bunch of embarrassing documents from the United States central intelligence agency, including private documents between diplomats. Sweden raises sexual assault charges against him a few weeks later. He flees to UK and seeks asylum at the Ecuador embassy, on grounds of being afraid that the charges were a false pretense to get him extradited to the US on charges of espionage. The US claimed it was false and there was no intention to get him extradited to the US. He then get kicked out of the embassy, and put in UK jail. Sweden then drops the charges. US then charges him with espionage and request that he should be extradited to the US. Decades later and the court battles continues. His health deteriorate to the point where UN special rapporteur on torture request that the whole affair need to end.
