My favorite new tidbit is that if you believe Turing machines can result in consciousness, you believe that certain integers are conscious when executed (lambda calculus).

- int_19h 2y agoIf you believe in that, you're also likely to believe that consciousness is not a static trait but rather a process. Thus integers themselves are not conscious, but a process that produces a sequence of integers may be.
- mensetmanusman 2y agoA process is still a clock cycle and execution.
- int_19h 2y agoSure, but again, it doesn't mean that "integers can be conscious". It means that a sequence of changing integers can be.
- mensetmanusman 2y agoAny sequence is also an integer. Don’t forget how large the number line is ;)
- int_19h 2y agoI get your point, but you still need a time arrow to say that something is conscious. Sure, you can e.g. encode all the states of the system over time and represent it as one big-ass integer, but at that point the most that you could say is that what the integer describes was conscious.
