I wish Nvidia would work nicely with Sway. I fully understand the Sway developers' dislike of Nvidia considering how hostile Nvidia was for many years. I suppose nowadays Sway should work with Nvidia but you still have to use the `--unsupported-gpu` option and enable kernel modesetting.
- Zambyte 2y agoI have been using --unsuported-gpu on my laptop with a quadro card in it for years
- hyperpl 2y agoAny idea if you can use the proprietary nvidia driver for better gaming performance while running sway via nouveau? I'm still on i3 on my desktop but sway everywhere I have amdgpu or intel.
- Zambyte 2y agoYou definitely can't run nouveau at the same time as the propriety drivers. You can just use the proprietary drivers though. I don't know my exact stack, but I have definitely run CUDA and ROCm software while using Sway.
- porphyra 2y agoWith recent nvidia versions, proprietary drivers work decently with Sway if you enable kernel modesetting. There was some jank with fbdev (an optional framebuffer thing with better performance) at some point, not sure if version 550 fixed it.
- porphyra 2y agoI just retried Sway on nvidia proprietary drivers. It is still a bad experience imo compared to i3. * Cursor didn't show up at first. I had to use `export WLR_NO_HARDWARE_CURSORS=1`, but the software cursor had some noticeable latency to it. * Extreme flickering in both Firefox and terminals. I installed wlroots-nvidia [1] but even then the flickering, while improved, was not gone. I manually played with WLR_RENDERER options between gles2 and vulkan but they all had flickering. [2] In the end I decided that the flickering issue prevents me from using Sway. - TaylorAlexander 2y agoI had to look it up but if anyone is curious, Sway is a Wayland-based drop in replacement for i3, a tiling window manager. I always wanted to get in to i3, but traditional window managers seem to work better with my brain.
- jasoneckert 2y agoThe high learning curve for tiling window managers is definitely worth the effort in the end. I'm a sway user, used to be an i3 user, and will never return to GNOME or KDE Plasma Workspaces.
- internet101010 2y agoI'd add that it's way easier if you already have a hotkey mindset. Basically if someone is part of the cult of vim they will probably do just fine with a tiler, otherwise there will be a bit of a struggle.
- Zhyl 2y agoTiling window managers are a different way of thinking about how one uses a computer, similar to how different touch interfaces are, but in the other more keyboardly direction. I find I reach for a tiling WM (or tmux) when I have a lot of terminal tasks I need to do and being able to quickly summon, dismiss and rearrange windows visibly is more important than their placement. As with everything else, everyone has their preferences and each paradigm has its strengths, weaknesses and natural use cases.
- jadbox 2y agoSee 3mux for terminal i3 like tiling https://github.com/aaronjanse/3mux https://github.com/aaronjanse/3mux
- yencabulator 2y ago> Tiling window managers are a different way of thinking about how one uses a computer, similar to how different touch interfaces are, but in the other more keyboardly direction. Tiling windows and touch interactions work great together, if the system is set up to things like snap to fit. Current day tablets & many phones do limited forms of tiling, because it is the better fit. Managing floating windows on a touch-only system (like a tablet) is the worst combo.
