Librarians Are Waging a Quiet War Against International "Data Cartels"
- musicale 2y agoPublishers seem to be doing their best to sabotage the intrinsic, reader- and library-beneficial features of ebooks and digital collections (such as unlimited readers anywhere on the internet at near-zero marginal cost, easy replication and distribution of books and collections, easy format shifting, etc.) while adding new, reader- and library-hostile features (invasive tracking, annoying restrictions, remote deletion, intrusive monetization and advertising, etc.) This aligns with existing business incentives, but not necessarily with the public interest. This seems unlikely to change without changes to copyright and privacy law, along with effective enforcement.

They are, today, what the ideal zero-marginal ebook overlay could look like for libraries across the globe. And it's all possible today, before a proper legal framework exists. Fighting without shame for the Library Genesis helps us establish a need for that new framework.
