Yet when it comes to kids being able to communicate at a distance, I think we’ve lost something. My son (12) is quite fascinated when I explain how the old landline approach used to work. That there wasn’t really an age limit, that you could find out someone’s number just from a book, that the house had a phone and you might have to ask to talk to someone. He says it’s too complicated now because all his friends have varied access to devices, are on different chat apps, it is awkward to ask someone for their phone number or email, no one want to talk (voice), etc.
