It's interesting, I live in an a stereotypically-affluent and tech-forward Silicon Valley suburb, and very few of the kids in my kids' elementary school (ages 8 and 10) have smartphones.
I would say that Apple Watches are more common (but still less than 15% of kids) and that the few kids with phones have them in order to coordinate between divorced parents.
Around a third of families have one or both parents working in Big Tech. Maybe they know better!
