I still can't turn off that horrible assistant on Android. No I don't want my audio interrupted by a voice asking if I want to enable a shitty voice assistant that I have disabled as much as your settings allow.
- klondike_klive 2y agoI heard my little son say "go away Bixby" the other day, having heard me say it so many times after accidentally pressing the dedicated (and un-deactivate-able) button on my Samsung phone
- Loughla 2y agoWhat phone do you have that it isn't about to be deactivated? Every one I've had has been able to turn that off, and two of them were even able to be reassigned to whatever I wanted.
- klondike_klive 2y agoIt's a Galaxy S10+ - pretty old now, does everything I need. Intentionally bought refurbished as a cheap phone that was nevertheless pretty fast and had a decent battery life. The Bixby key aside, everything else has been fine.
- rchaud 2y agoI have a Galaxy Fold and never heard a peep from those apps after disabling them. Then again I haven't installed the Android 13 update that it keeps begging me to....
- saltcured 2y agoI did disable the assistant on my Pixel phone. I think it was just Settings -> Apps -> Default apps -> Digital Assistant app -> None. But I don't even want "search" to be present in nearly any context. I installed a different launcher since Google doesn't accept the idea that this should be a configurable option or widget on the home screen. However, I wish there was a system preference so that I could disable/hide/shrink the search bar that is omnipresent in so many apps. I'd be OK with some smaller icon, menu item, or gesture to open a search prompt. It is not a common part of my desired UX ever anywhere when using GMail, Messages, etc. If I am doing a web search, it's going to be in Firefox even if it is using Google search. I also wish for a system toggle that truly removed any on-screen vestiges of voice prompting. No, there's never a time when I am trying to search and actually wanted to turn on a speech interface rather than the keyboard.
