Ask HN: Why do you care if content is partly created by AI?

- MilnerRoute 2y agoThere's an implied "relationship" between the viewer of any creative content - and its creator. That another human is sharing an emotion, a human experience, a human vision... I heard someone say: imagine you could replace a child's parents with machines. Would you? Should you?
- dragonwriter 2y ago> I heard someone say: imagine you could replace a child’s parents with machines. > Would you? Depends on the parents and the machine. There are certainly parents where if you could (that is, if a machine would do a minimally-tolerable job”), the only reasonable answer is “yes, absolutely”. Identifying those on a timely basis may be a problem, though.
- zero-sharp 2y agoWhat's the context? Is the content intended to represent truth? Is the content intended to be creative? Can it cite its sources when there is a need to do so? Can it actually do what it's being advertised to do? If it delivers bad content and there is a need for accountability, how would that work? My gut says that it has the potential to create a lot of junk that's going to pass as legitimate, which isn't exactly a good direction.
- dragonwriter 2y agoGenerally, I don’t, any more than I care if the creator used any other tools in the creative process.
- JohnFen 2y agoThe question is far too vague. I may or may not care, depending on the context and how it's done. I do care about disclosure, though. If the output of an LLM is being used verbatim, that should be disclosed. Knowing that helps to properly understand the content.
- onemoresoop 2y ago> If the output of an LLM is being used verbatim, that should be disclosed. But if someone replaces a few words here and there it's no longer verbatim and could escape disclosure in this case.
- JohnFen 2y agoOnly if you read my statement as come sort of precise legal language. My intended meaning, however, would consider it still verbatim if you've just replaced a few words. What I am trying to leave room for is using the output as inspiration, but writing your own words. If what you're using is not your own expression, that should be disclosed.
- marssaxman 2y agoThe current state of agitation over AI reminds me of the fuss over music sampling back in the '80s. I am sure all of the big reactive feelings people are expressing right now will sound just as quaint to the next generation.
- onemoresoop 2y agoAnd yet many lawsuits and large payments were exchanged over samples from copyrighted material. It remains to be seen how it will all play out with LLMs
