  Line going up means economy healthy, right? Who cares about housing affordability, or ballooning national, student, and medical debt, or people having fewer kids due to economic anxiety, or increasingly destructive natural disasters all across the country... As long as Wall Street is doing well, the "country" is doing well! 40,000! Wow!

  The dow Jones index is price weighted instead of market cap weighted. Constructing an index like that doesn't make any sense, e.g. a stock split reduces the weight of the stock in the index even if the market cap of the company stays the same![1] It is therefore meaningless and best ignored.
