Well, the primary meaning of "cock" is a male chicken (also applied to some other male birds) in English too, irrespective of the slang terms. "Le coq" is also a symbol of France https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gallic_rooster https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gallic_rooster, see also https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Le_Coq_Sportif https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Le_Coq_Sportif, and coq being a French project, it's understandable why they would choose this name (and have second thoughts about changing it because of other people's sensitivities).
