It’s weird since it’s just a technical term that fits the majority of people. The reason that most are unfamiliar with it is just that being transgender has been stigmatized historically and therefore not been talked about much and when you assume everyone is something, you don’t need the term for it. It’s kind of like of heterosexual was considered a slur suddenly when the discussion of homosexual rights started gaining speed. Because of old people angrily stating “I’m not a heterosexual! I’m normally sexual damnit! We don’t need a term for that!”
