You can turn it off in the settings

  Thanks - I knew it was a setting back when the first version of split screen apps was introduced, then I would have sworn the setting was removed, and I don't know why I just assumed it still wasn't there. For anyone else that wants to find it, just search for 'multi' in the settings app, and the third result will take you to the Multitasking & Gestures settings panel.
