I mean, fair enough. It sounds like Proton had a legal obligation to provide the recovery address under Swiss law. I am not 100% sure whether or not they could have refused, but Apple is the company that provided names and home address.
- exitzer0 2y ago"Once the Guardia Civil obtained the iCloud email address, the documents show that it requested information from Apple, which in turn provided a full name, two home addresses and a linked Gmail account." Basically everything but their favorite colors, TV shows and emojis.
- seanhunter 2y agoIf Apple receives a subpoena and they have the information they are required to disclose it. I guess "Companies respond to court order as they are required to by law" doesn't make quite as snappy a headline.
- fmajid 2y agoDo they require a recovery address? If so, that is a design flaw that should be rectified.
- protonmail 2y agoNo, a recovery email is an optional recovery method, and there are other options besides email that we offer: https://proton.me/support/set-account-recovery-methods https://proton.me/support/set-account-recovery-methods
