I mean, think of what happened with DVD copying: Supposedly, everyone bought into a DRM-laden scheme; but it got circumvented into eventual irrelevance, will all-region readers pretty much the norm after some point. But - it's not impossible that what you're describing is what will end up happening. Question is - is there a worthwhile alternative?
