OpenAI demo some ChatGPT and GPT-4 updates on 13 May
- echelon 2y agoRumor on Twitter is that OpenAI is launching their search product right ahead of Google I/O to rain on Google's parade.
- jurmous 2y agoSam Altman pre announced it will not be a search engine https://twitter.com/sama/status/1788989777452408943 https://twitter.com/sama/status/1788989777452408943
- gk1 2y agoIt's possible they want to position it as something other than a search engine, like "answer engine" or "personal agent" or whatever, even if what it's meant to do is replace the traditional search engine.
- minimaxir 2y agoOpenAI doesn't have enough brand credibility to pull an Apple and try to arbitrarily redefine a foundational terminology.
- washadjeffmad 2y agoWhat's a search engine?

- minimaxir 2y ago> not gpt-5, not a search engine, but we’ve been hard at work on some new stuff we think people will love! feels like magic to me. https://twitter.com/sama/status/1788989777452408943 https://twitter.com/sama/status/1788989777452408943
- boto3 2y agoI am thinking some efficient RAG experience. E.g. you can ask "Tell me about the Donald Trump trial."
- colesantiago 2y agoI don’t believe him on “not a search engine”. Either: OpenAI releases “updates” to GPT-4 and chatgpt to derail Google I/O’s announcements. Or OpenAI releases the search product after the Google I/O announcement as a surprise announcement. Or likely both. It’s obvious the goal is to massively steer attention away from Google’s announcement as they did before, so OpenAI may likely do two announcements, the second by surprise. I don’t think they can be silent for this long and come back with just “updates”, they are definitely about to release a surprise. Sam trying to say ‘not a search engine’ already means they know everyone knows they’ve been working on one and they are trying to not be predictable.

- gdsdfe 2y agoI think it might be some sort of code assistant
- artninja1988 2y agoNew codex version or what do you have in mind? Something like Devin that actually works?
- Atotalnoob 2y agoI just got a demo of GitHub’s copilot workspaces. It looks like Devin but it works.
- jaggs 2y agoAltman: "not gpt-5, not a search engine, but we’ve been hard at work on some new stuff we think people will love! feels like magic to me." What could be magic?
- dyauspitr 2y agoI’m patiently waiting for text to 3D model generation.
- eightysixfour 2y agoIt will be a GPT-4 tuned for agentic tasks.
- minimaxir 2y agoIn Silicon Valley, CEOs have a fiduciary responsibility to call every upcoming product "magic" even if it's boring.
- orionsbelt 2y agoSure, but ChatGPT, DALL-E, and SORA and probably the 3 biggest "magic" like products to be released in tech, so higher probability that it's true.
- skybrian 2y agoIt’s hype. ignore for now and wait for the actual announcement.

- satvikpendem 2y agoI'm already feeling that ChatGPT is becoming useless to me beyond the basic summarization and idea generation tasks, while only last year it felt like magic. Is this what it feels like to run on the hedonic treadmill?
- skybrian 2y agoI think it's more like learning my way around a new kind of video game. At first I don't know what it's capable of and can imagine things. Once I know the game's limitations, it doesn't have that mystery anymore. Also, it's a hint generator. Once I've learned enough about a subject, the hints aren't useful. But ask about a new subject that I'm ignorant of and genuinely curious about, and the hints might be useful again, even though sometimes they're wrong.
- summerlight 2y agoIt seems weird to me that while OpenAI reacts to Google quite seriously (almost all of their recent major PR moves coincided with Google's), their strategy against Llama is simple disregard, which is an existential threat to OpenAI more than any other models or products in my view.
- xucian 2y agowondering the same
- mupuff1234 2y agoPretty sure it's coming from Satya, he seems pretty hell bent to go after Google.
- ChrisArchitect 2y agoMaybe update link to the less generic https://twitter.com/OpenAI/status/1788987793613725786 https://twitter.com/OpenAI/status/1788987793613725786
- jessenaser 2y agoNot GPT-5 doesn't mean Not GPT-4.5... think about it :)
- colesantiago 2y agoThis. Think about what they aren’t saying and what has been leaked.
- mupuff1234 2y agoBut GPT 4.5 probably isnt that exciting otherwise why not just call it GPT 5?
- npace12 2y agoMaybe a voice assistant?
- nojvek 2y agoAnnouncement about an announcement. Is this against HN policy? Let’s wait till Monday.
