I literally got this today. I hate it. There was a baby rabbit in my yard while I was mowing. I shut the mower off and took a bunch of pictures of it to show my wife. [1] I open Google Photos later and I'm super confused. I'm telling my wife "I know I took a bunch of pictures" but there's only one showing. Well they were grouped now... And it only shows one with a tiny number on it? It's genuinely obnoxious. I don't want this... At the very least show multiple pictures in the place of one, so there's a chance I can find the picture I'm looking for. Update: well, the good news is I just found how to turn it off. There's a slider option for "stack similar photos" 1. https://photos.app.goo.gl/MugdhXy8k3hYtbbJ7 https://photos.app.goo.gl/MugdhXy8k3hYtbbJ7

Yeah that's stacks, not the mentioned redesign. I'm not a fan of stacks either since there's no way to select photos from both inside and outside the stack to share. In general they seem kind of buggy too, ex. https://www.reddit.com/r/googlephotos/comments/19dehca/sharing_photos_from_stacks/ https://www.reddit.com/r/googlephotos/comments/19dehca/shari...

If you can’t point at adding some “AI” to a feature your job is at risk, I’m sure that little stacks has some image classifier that groups them together and the team was able to say “look! we added AI! please don’t lay us off!” I’m not joking either, I feel bad for friends there - I’m hearing horror stories.

This is ironic, considering how bad/nerfed the search function in photos has become.

This is why you start with a user need and find a technology to solve it, but Google leadership are doing that in the reverse…which is fucking dumb. Similar to the Apple Vision Pro in a way - yeah, cool tech, but why exactly do I need it?
