The End of Social Media: An Interview with Jack Dorsey
- talldayo 2y ago> We were doing something similar to what we did at Square at the time, which was fund a bunch of open source developers to work on the Bitcoin protocol, because it directly benefited everything Square was doing in terms of money movement. The longer this goes on the harder it is to believe he won't end up crazy like McAfee.
- dewey 2y agoOf all the snippets in the text, why this one? A company funding OSS development because it's working roughly towards a goal they support seems like a great thing?
- talldayo 2y agoWere you on Twitter, before Dorsey sold it? When cryptocurrency features were added, there was a mass exodus from the site with more threatening to leave if Lightning/BTC transactions became a central feature. Dorsey has tried this same shtick repeatedly and has only pissed off his community; it's a good thing that his conniving contributions have been removed from BlueSky. McAfee also had ostensibly admirable goals in encouraging a world without borders, if you ignore his arrest warrant for murder.
- dewey 2y agoYes, my account is from 2008. I don't think it felt like a "mass exodus" from the site at that point though, way different to what happened after the Elon take-over or briefly when "App.net" was launched as an alternative.
- talldayo 2y agoOutside of crypto and tech circles, the gaudy-ass NFT icons and pointless integrations were all anyone would talk about. Twitter users were lucky to get 3 features a year, and towards the end of Dorsey's tenure all 3 of those features would be crypto-focused. It was an obviously failed integration that Dorsey continues to advocate for on platforms that work perfectly well without it.
