This is not about lying but being, quite literally, economical with the truth. Just as you don't spend all your money at once, don't tell your boss everything you've achieved at once. Or not always anyway. I had to write a monthly progress report for one recent job. I kept a document of headlines for this, and put only two or three into each report. I kept some back for rainier months. This also helped me discuss my "objectives" since I often could predict at least one thing I would achieve in the next few months.
