As always when this comes up, I ask about schools. Every single school system that has tried 4 day school weeks has had poor outcomes across the board. Children do worst academically and they fair worst socially, since that one less day is one less day that at risk children have access to either safety or food in some cases.
We can't ask teachers to work 5 days when the rest of the world doesn't. I'd also be interested in how much of the value some people are pulling from 4 day work weeks is just having a kid-free day to accomplish things. Would the value for care takers (who would make up a significant amount of young people) the same if their children accompanied them?
I don't really have an opinion on the 4 day work week, but I do think it's important to consider impact from all angles. I just never see the question of children come up in this conversation, although we know from covid that anything that impacts how children do anything in a systematic way has huge impact good or bad.

- barfbagginus 2y agoMaybe normalizing society to a four-day work week would make 4-day School weeks successful as well. A big reason is that kids would get an extra day with parents. In a 5-day work society, 4-day school kids have one day where they're "abandoned" - not being taken care of by either parents or teachers. In a four-day work society, the extra "weekend" day can be spent with parents.
- quartesixte 2y agoYou are assuming these kids have parents (or other trustworthy, responsible adults) to go home to. Which, in large areas of the USA, they do not.
- dagw 2y agoIn a four-day work society, the extra "weekend" day can be spent with parents. Assuming the 'whole world' agrees to take the same day off. A more likely implementation is that you'll keep the traditional 5-day work week, but everybody only work 4 of those 5 days on any given week.
- dagw 2y agoWe can't ask teachers to work 5 days when the rest of the world doesn't. If this came to pass I'm sure some scheduling could be done so that kids still get a 5 day school week and each teacher still only work 4 out of those 5 days. Everybody doesn't necessarily have to have the same extra day off.
- skeaker 2y agoI don't understand. You're assuming that a 4-day week is all or nothing, but that's obviously not true. Plenty of places already do it while plenty don't. Some places do a 7 day work week.
