I suspect OLE was mainly useful when you didn’t have networked file storage that was easy to link to, so you had to stuff a file into another file in order to easily access both. Thats just a guess tho, I only remember it being used for graphs that you made in Excel and could then paste into Powerpoint and still be able to make changes.
