Boy Scouts of America Announces Rebrand to 'Scouting America'
- mock-possum 2y agoBSA is one of those organizations that I didn’t have any patience for in my youth - like my church, they struggled with the basic concept of equality. They claimed to care, but they just couldn’t quite bring themselves to treat non-males and queers equally. “The Boy Scouts are not for you” was the message, delivered as kindly as possible, and it’s one I received loud and clear as early as middle school. It’s nice to think that maybe nowadays, kids can earn their eagle badge without having to feel like they’re buying into a hypocritically ‘morally straight’ organization. Or at least, they won’t have the same hesitation about it that I did 30 years ago. (I’ve even heard they’ve officially cut back on all that weird Native American LARPing in Order of the Arrow)
- llmblockchain 2y agoInteresting take. I'm a straight male and always thought putting a bunch of boys together in the woods with short shorts and high socks sounded about as non-straight as it gets. Also, the Native American LARPing line was pretty dope.
- bdjsiqoocwk 2y agoHaha that was my take wrt all sports in school. I don't want other guys touching me. Yuck.
- foxyv 2y agoOh you bet! Some of the most flamboyant stuff I've ever seen happened in scout camps. The old scoutmasters HATED it so much! Which was part of the fun to be honest.
- mrgoldenbrown 2y agoCutting ties with the Mormons was a good first step towards BSA catching up to modern ethics. Hopefully they continue and officially eliminate all the religious requirements.
