> Please, please stop evaluating local transportation administrations as competent. I’ve hung out with these people, gone on walks with them, driven around with them, listened to them get excited about a new pedestrian affordence they’ve installed, and the lack of awareness and closemindedness (which is obviously necessary to sustain a shitty system creaking into it’s 100th year of existance) is stunning.

There is a fundamental problem here. The problem of incompetence is not unique to transportation agencies, it's rather universal in many public and private sectors. Think about IT industry, think about US healthcare, think about the congress hearing of Pichai. There seems to be an incapability of humans societies to run systems at this scale with expected efficiency and competencies. It seems the whole modern civilization is broken at its roots. It seems that humans don't run the systems they claim to run, rather a systemic force or something greater than individual and collective humans, one that is unaffected by human motivations.
There is a tangential problem here, which is the human incapability to comprehend the technoindustrial way of life [1]. I'm not talking about that: I'm talking about the problem that is human societies' inability to run technoindustrial society in an unbroken manner. I think, probably contrary to what most people think, the society worked back then, however differently to what it worked today.
