I have a method. Remove your headphones and listen to your teammates. I've always used the "fucks per-hour" as a measurement of productivity.
For the uninitiated, the more fucks, the more productivity.. ie, they are looking at the code and trying to do something.
True story-- at my first job the fucks were so bad they moved some of us into our own offices.
- scruple 2y agoI love this. When they RTO'd us at work, I ended up sitting next to someone who isn't on our team and who isn't an engineer. He complained to his manager that I curse a lot and when they asked my manager to have me tone it down they moved him instead. I'm not being loud or particularly vulgar, just lots of "what the fuck?" and "what is this shit?" and "how the hell does this even work?" being involuntarily mumbled to myself.

- pvdoom 2y agoI had the exact opposite experience :( Stating things like "what is this shit"or "This is an absolute dumpster" was taken as demoralising colleagues ...
- scruple 2y agoOh, well that's pretty funny because most of the time I'm complaining about code I wrote...
