Absolute bollocks. Any DBMS and any competent developer will cope with punctuation just fine. And punctuation is specifically ALLOWED by BS7666, if they are part of the name:
Abbreviations and punctuation should not be used unless they appear in the designated name, e.g. “Dr Newton’s Way”. Only single spaces should be used.
