  Comically, many of Bitcoinica's customers were those who sent funds to the service to be able to go short (bet against) bitcoins. But those "investing in bitcoins" wouldn't have lost from this unless they also happen to have been speculating at Bitcoinica with them. Bitcoinica is a service where a financial product called a contract for difference (CFD) is traded.
