Show HN: My HomeLab (and other cool stuff)
Just wanted to make my first post about something interesting I've been working on for some time.
Any ideas/suggestions for new hardware or software I should try out are welcome, though I will only have time for a major overhaul in a month or two where I want to redo and document everything a bit better than how it is currently.
Hope this can inspire someone to start their own homelab or give some ideas to already existing ones!
- gnabgib 2y agoThis doesn't look like a valid Show HN[0], it's a cool setup, but probably shouldn't have that prefix [0]: https://news.ycombinator.com/showhn.html https://news.ycombinator.com/showhn.html
- NKkrisz 2y agoOh I see, sorry I'm new to this :)
- atlas_hugged 2y agoCool setup! Also, if that’s a bed I see, my experience doing the same was that having a computer in my bedroom out of convenience can one day inadvertently make the bedroom a source of stress. I personally made myself a rule to try to only allow “things that spark joy” in the bedroom. Anything that can conceivably be stressful is done elsewhere (in my garage currently). My sleep quality has vastly improved (though it took quite a while for my brain to unlearn the associations it made)
- NKkrisz 2y agoI can't really put it elsewhere and it does get loud when it's turned on so I will try sound proofing it somehow in the future (already swapped the Ubiquiti Switch's fans to Noctua ones). The main noise source are the HDDs so it would be nice to get SSDs instead but I don't have the budget for that sadly.

- dsab 2y agoPlease document how disks are connected to HBA device. I am very courius about this technology since I run my own proxmox cluster (2 nodes- Intel NUC and PC with wake on lan) at home already
- NKkrisz 2y agoThe HBA is in PCI-e slot (with an adapter) in a Lenovo MiniPC, more details here: https://github.com/NKkrisz/HomeLab/blob/main/markdown/Lenovo_M720Q_Setup.md https://github.com/NKkrisz/HomeLab/blob/main/markdown/Lenovo... The HBA is connected to the HDDs with SFF-8088 to SATA cables. They are in a 3D printed rack powered by an ATX PSU and some adapters. After this I installed Proxmox to the internal SSD and then made a VM for TrueNAS which has the HBA connected to it with PCI-e passthrough after finding a tutorial for it on Youtube. You can see how this whole thing looks here: https://github.com/NKkrisz/HomeLab/blob/main/markdown/ThinkRack_Setup.md https://github.com/NKkrisz/HomeLab/blob/main/markdown/ThinkR...
