DoorDash won't let you tip NYC drivers without the app
- behnamoh 2y agoGreat. The whole idea of tipping is so ridiculous. Like, “I paid you for your service but here’s 20% more just because for unwritten rules I’m supposed to pay this.”
- nextworddev 2y agoThe idea of tipping was to incentivize better service and to justify businesses paying service workers poorly. So getting rid of tipping actually ends up just hurting service workers. Might as well raise prices, pay workers more, and get rid of tipping.
- Wowfunhappy 2y ago> Might as well raise prices, pay workers more, and get rid of tipping This is exactly what I think should happen. It's better for everyone: • The worker knows exactly how much he or she will be paid. • The consumer can determine the real cost of a service by just reading the price.
- unclenoriega 2y agoAre those actually the reasons tipping developed or just post hoc rationalizations now that it's solidified? I don't know the answer, but I'm wondering if you do.
- 0xC0ncord 2y agoIs there a reason why you can't just tip your driver in cash?
- lenerdenator 2y ago"What is this... 'cash'? Is that some sort of new crypto I haven't heard about?" - DoorDash devs, maybe.
- readyman 2y agoDrivers usually just drop off orders at the door, per request by the customer. Requesting otherwise would probably deprioritize your delivery and cost the driver money because they have to wait, causing other orders to be delivered later. Is there a reason why Door Dash removed the tipping feature from their site?

- dc3k 2y agoWhen is this “tip after service” thing going to be rolled out to every country? I’m really tired of tipping in advance, having the tip automatically set to 30%, being threatened with cold food if I remove the advanced tip, etc.
- Simulacra 2y agoProbably never because drivers use it as a way to discriminate. Not enough tip? Your food will be cold or may never show up. A better question is when will tipping in general END?
- jareklupinski 2y ago> when will tipping in general END? already ended for me: i chose an apartment in the middle of a bunch of different great places within walking / pickup distance i'll still leave a couple bucks at the counter when i go in if it was a big order tho
- roskelld 2y agoTipping before service is a bribe or unofficial bidding war to jump the line or worse, be in the line for pick up at all.
- josefresco 2y ago>Now, in New York City, customers like myself who want to continue tipping must do so after their order is placed. >On the DoorDash app, the “add tip” option is near the top when viewing a past order. > “We know tips are still an important way for consumers to show Dashers their appreciation, so consumers will still be able to tip after checkout and for up to 30 days after they order,” Isn't this how it's supposed to work? Why would I tip before my order is delivered?
- edmundsauto 2y agoBecause it’s not a reward for good service, it’s a reverse bid for service. The estimated earnings are shown to drivers so if there is no tip, that will be lower and less likely to take the job. It’s just weird to call it a tip.
- stemlord 2y agoRight so what doordash did is a good thing. Now it's not weird to call it a tip. All jurisdictions should do what they need to do to ensure workers are compensated enough regardless of tipping
- standardUser 2y agoI live in NYC and have ordered from 3 different delivery apps in the last 2 weeks - GrubHub, GoPuff and a local alcohol delivery app. All of them let me tip in advance when placing the order.
- antonpirker 2y agoNo app will prevent you giving the driver some cash..
