Can you provide a credible source for that?
> The pro-Palestine protestors on campus have been, as far as I can tell, almost entirely peaceful everywhere in the country.
Yes, agreed.
- ceejayoz 2y ago"Explosives" probably overstates it a bit, but fireworks were thrown into the encampment; first link has clear video of it. https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/video/2024/may/01/fireworks-thrown-at-gaza-protesters-as-tensions-rise-at-ucla-video-report https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/video/2024/may/01/firewo... https://nymag.com/intelligencer/article/counterprotesters-shoot-fireworks-into-ucla-encampment.html https://nymag.com/intelligencer/article/counterprotesters-sh... A picture of a pro-Palestinian protester being hit with something I'd term a bludgeon is similarly easy to find: https://www.rollingstone.com/politics/politics-news/ucla-student-encampment-attack-pro-israel-1235013151/ https://www.rollingstone.com/politics/politics-news/ucla-stu...
- megous 2y agoUCLA renting the lawn next to the protesting students to some outside pro Israeli proterstors and then leting them attack their own students is quite a bold move. This almost looks like incitement to violence. The part about police just watching the students being beaten is also a nice reminder that police have no legal duty to protect anyone in the US. You can be beaten to a pulp in front of an officer of law and he can just watch and enjoy.
- wolverine876 2y ago> UCLA renting the lawn next to the protesting students to some outside pro Israeli proterstors What does that mean, 'renting the lawn', and where can I read about that? > The part about police just watching the students being beaten is also a nice reminder that police have no legal duty to protect anyone in the US. You can be beaten to a pulp in front of an officer of law and he can just watch and enjoy. That's something that I've wondered about, and which seems to attract little attention. Wouldn't that depend on local law? And wouldn't it at least create liability for the city, just like not inspecting a building that collapses would create liability?
- megous 2y agoIt means that there was a well funded and professionally organized protest from outsiders right next to the encampment on Sunday, incl. jumbotron, audio systems, private security, stage, etc. Can anyone just bring that kind of stuff to campus without university approval?
