Given that there are huge socioeconomic differences on the basis of "race" (which is an imaginary idea, even if we acknowledge that humans vary by genetics) its very difficult to separate these effects. The fact that you don't even mention it is frankly quite conspicuous and might account for some of the negative reactions.
