My Love/Hate Relationship with Repetition
- quectophoton 3y agoYeah, repetition helps the brain to make shortcuts and learn to do stuff on autopilot. It's what allows your brain to go from: "Start driving, we're now on street X so I turn left on that place, oh there's a semaphore, let's stop. Semaphore is green again, check nobody's doing anything weird. Safe! Let's continue. [many more steps] Aaaaand finally home, let's park, oh there's a spot there, a bit tight tho. Okay, parked, check everything. Finally home!" ... to be able to just: "Enter car. [Start thinking about what you'll gift someone for their birthday]. Holy shit how am I already in front of my home's door."
- wisty 3y agoThere's a lot of cognitive dissonance in the dislike of repetition, I think. People say they want to be good at things, but need excuses if they are told it takes work. So they find exuses to say that repetition isn't going to make them better in a deep and meaningful way.
