Greenpeace Crusade Against Golden Rice Will Blind and Kill Children
- dexwiz 2y agoI can understand the general distaste of GMOs, especially in impoverished countries. Often they are used a mechanism of market capture, and ties farmers to larger international regulations and obligations in which they have little to no power. But golden rice seems to try to specifically avoid these issues in humanitarian cases to make it free. I am not a lawyer, but seems like a better deal than buying from Monsanto. https://www.goldenrice.org/Content2-How/how9_IP.php#:~:text=Independent%20claims%20of%20Australian%20patent,Ingo%20Potrykus%20and%20Peter%20Beyer https://www.goldenrice.org/Content2-How/how9_IP.php#:~:text=....
- PaulHoule 2y agoLyndon LaRouche got a hundred musicians to agree with his crackpot idea about tuning orchestras by running a fake poll. The original Golden Rice doesn't really contain that much Vitamin A (though Golden Rice 2 does), there are other Vitamin A sources. For that matter there are many agronomic properties you might want in your rice rather than Vitamin A production. It's ridiculous to reduce all the problems of nutrition and agriculture down to the acceptance or not of one particular product.
- dexwiz 2y agoI would agree LaRouche was a crackpot, but what does he have to do with golden rice? I’m genuinely confused by this comment.
- PaulHoule 2y agoA shared tactic of politicization, in this case recruiting 100 Nobel Prize winners only a few of which know anything about agronomy or the problems of marketing technology products to the developing world.
- dexwiz 2y agoAgreed, but that wasn’t my comment at all. I trust 100 Nobel laureates as much as “9 out of 10 dentists.” https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nobel_disease https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nobel_disease

- reify 2y agoThat is not true The introduction of GM rice has contributed to blindness by claiming that Genetically Modified Rice (golden rice) provides vitamin "A" to prevent blindness but there is no evidence that golden rice does this. A claim based more on spin than reality, and, over the years, the interests behind Golden Rice have wasted no time in attacking anyone who questioned it. Golden Rice is really a ‘Trojan horse’; a public relations stunt pulled by the agribusiness corporations to garner acceptance of genetically engineered (GE) crops and food… money and efforts would be better spent on restoring natural and agricultural biodiversity rather than destroying it by promoting monoculture plantations and GE food crops. There are better ways.
