I use Mint day to day but used fedora briefly when I wanted to use Pipewire as an audio stack. Fedora is great, but mint is a bit simpler. I think I'll switch to fedora to use Silverblue at some point. Cinnamon is definitely the goat DE and it's not even close imo. But I think Linux Mint is probably the better distro ATM just cause it's a bit simpler
- resource_waste 2y agoMint is on debian-time, so its too outdated for professional use.
- nightowl_games 2y agoI use it professionally. You're going to have to be more specific.
- resource_waste 2y agoAnything with Nvidia GPUs basically didnt work in 2023.
- nightowl_games 2y agoThat is a pretty reasonable criticism. Albeit I imagine it's fixable.
- resource_waste 2y agoNo no no You don't say 'grandma can crack out the terminal'. Thats completely unacceptable.
- nightowl_games 2y agoI didnt say that. We were talking about "Professional Use". I imagine a Professional can install the nvidia drivers on Linux Mint.
- lproven 2y ago[Author/submitter here, FWIW] > Mint is on debian-time No it isn't. Normal Mint is on Ubuntu LTS time, and since Ubuntu is literally 2/3 of desktop Linux, you can bet your booty that the latest nVidia gigabyte of half-assed bloat 100% will support the latest Ubuntu LTS. Then there is LMDE, which is on Debian time, true, but again: if you want the latest spaceheater from the company that does for silicon what Microsoft does for efficient software design, then download the latest nVidia chonk and install it.

It can't even display status icons in >1 column. On widescreens this is necessary functionality and it can't do it. It's huge and sluggish because it's based on GNOME Shell, so it's not so much a "desktop" as a window manager with an embedded Javascript runtime which is interpreting on the fly a poor ripoff of a phone UI badly adapted to desktop use. Then a (very clever) third party has hacked _that_ to make it resemble Windows Vista or something. I'd rather just have something that was written directly to implement that UI, in proper compiled code like Thompson and Ritchie intended... such as Xfce, which even does the Vista taskbar if you install the "docklike taskbar" plugin. It's about one tenth of the size, and GNOME has, genuinely, something like 50x as many outstanding bugs because of the terrible way it was implemented.
- resource_waste 2y agoXFCE just isnt as nice. It lacks many of the customizations or 1 click access to features.
- lproven 2y agoBe specific! That's not a useful contribution. I find it much NICER to use than Cinnamon, so I want to know what you don't like about it. In the past I've found people criticise tiny trivial things that you can fix in 30sec with about half a dozen mouse clicks, but of course you need to know where and when to look. I ran Cinnamon as a daily driver for 5 months of irritation and annoyance, finding multiple pain points that could not be fixed, from the lack of multiple columns in status icons on upwards. So I switched to Xfce and put up with the lack of fractional scaling, which for me is the only thing that Cinnamon delivers -- and it can't do different scaling factors on 2 displays, so it's useless on the only machine where I need that feature.
