In the UK.
You dont need a medical degree or be a Doctor or GP to practice as a psychotherapist. You must however be registered with a professional body and the government to practice.
I would think that any AI fantasy of being an online therapist would be restricted to teaching the basics of CBT. After all the main work of CBT practitioners is teaching the basics of CBT (The A,B,C). There is no actual therapy work going on. More time is spent filling in forms during the sessions than actual therapeutic work.
The claims of treating depression, eating disorders etc etc in just 6-12 sessions has been disproved. A short time after CBT ends, the original problems resurface and the client is back to square one.
Under graduates like it (its easy to prove its efficacy when comparing data from forms) and governments like it because it is cheap.
CBT practitioners dont have to have any personal therapy so AI would not have to have any personal therapy either.
My friend lives in the USA and there are different rules there for practicing psychotherpists.
I am not convinced that online AI therapy will ever work.
Who in their right mind would share their most private, personal and confidential life experiences with a machine and then trust that machine to keep that information safe and secure. Only a fool.
