- Sakos 2y agoI don't understand the outrage by some people. The Sandy Bridge has popcnt and SSE4.2. If you're using anything older than that, you owe it to yourself to come out from under that rock and treat yourself to a Sandy Bridge or newer. It can't be understated how underpowered and obsolete these CPU's or how outdated these platforms are in regards to connectivity or featureset. You'd also be doing your electricity bill a favor. I've tried Windows 10/11 on a Pentium M and Core Duo and Core 2 Duo. It's abysmal performance-wise and honestly in every other way too.
- anthk 2y agoI tried Trisquel Mini on a Core Duo and Ungoogled Chromium with git://bitreich.org/privacy-haters ' config for Chromium based browser. They can browse the web with Ublock Origin sending all the ADs and bloated JS to /dev/null, watch 720p videos and 1080@30, run Street View as a JS+WebGL test (OpenGL 2.1 support it's more than enough for lots of tasks), use Libreoffice, Abiword, Gnumeric, Inkscape, IM with Telegram... Seriously, stop defendng crappy software. Windows 10 feature wise is not that different to a Windows 2000 machine with MS Office 2003. If should run screamly fast under a Core Duo, yet it throws out a perfectly fine machine to the trash. The Dual Core machine from my SO it's far faster than my first AMD Athon with 256MB, a machine I could run Kopete and KDE3 on it doing far more than a base W10 machine minus the resolution: 1024x768 vs 1280x720. Not so different in the end.
- Sakos 2y agoI'm not defending anything. I'm describing reality. Pre-Sandy Bridge hardware is hot garbage. Every time I have to deal with one of those systems with only USB 2.0 (or worse), I want to cry. If people want to hang onto their K6, they're free to use whatever Linux distro still bothers supporting it, because even that is becoming more difficult nowadays. There's no reason to use this stuff. It's crap. If you're satisfied with crap, that's more your problem than Microsoft's or anybody else's. I know I'd never subject anybody I love to that kind of PC hardware. But yeah, shoot the messenger. What a fucking waste.
- anthk 2y agoWhatever. It's more wasteful to throw down a perfectly fine machine where with just an SSD and ZRAM can do wonders under a light distro, even have 10-20 tabs open under Ungoogled Chromium like nothing. It's not reality, but you, high end users, are pretty spoiled. With UBo, your statement about requiring 1-2GB of RAM to view a web page it's pretty much bullshit unless it's something like Google Earth 3D or similar. Because even Youtube gets cuts down on CPU and RAM usage with that and the parameter array from the file at git://bitreich.org/privacy-haters copied to /etc/profiled/chromium.sh. Windows users can just paste the "--arguments --foo --bar..." list to the Chromium/Chrome desktop shortcut's EXE path settings after the EXE path.
- karmakaze 2y agoIt's not the operating system's job to consume resources--it's to efficiently schedule and run apps. Well that's one perspective, another might be maintaining sales of operating systems, hardware, and the economic ecosystem that it's a part of.
- Sakos 2y agoWe can't change the OS's that we have. The ship has sailed on efficiency. Why are you singling out Microsoft when every desktop application is now a bloated Electron piece of shit? When a single browser tab can take 1-2GB of memory? Nah, let's ignore the wide swaths of developers across the globe who literally don't give a shit and just beat the same dead horse that we have for thirty fucking years. > Well that's one perspective, another might be maintaining sales of operating systems, hardware, and the economic ecosystem that it's a part of. Are you serious? Sandy Bridge launched 2011. It's dirt cheap. It's performant. Just get one of the billions of used Thinkpads on Ebay or anywhere else. Nobody is being forced to buy the current generation. This is significantly better than the previous hardware block which was actually insane because it locked off everything older than a 7th gen Intel Core for no apparent reason. And it's actually sensible, because it's actually feature-based instead of completely arbitrary.
- karmakaze 2y ago> We can't change the OS's that we have. The ship has sailed on efficiency. Windows 11 on Intel is about the worst performance/power that I've known. I use Windows 10 on a Surface Go which is usable for light work after I disable lots of extraneous Windows services. Efficiency should be a default. I also don't run Electron 'PoS's either (except Slack on my work laptop) so don't see how that's relevant. We can choose different OS's like macOS on Apple Silicon or Linux on AMD.
