Portugal is perhaps the best example of how colonialism doesn't really benefit the common man. The colonial wars only made sense to those few rich portuguese who had land in Africa. The whole Salazar period was one of stagnation and many people (my family included) had to leave Portugal for better (or just some) opportunities elsewhere.
