PalmOS was a decently civilized platform to develop against. I remember using the CodeWarrior IDE to build a little portable app for managing parking meters. Using XModem over RS-232 you could update the machines' configuration, download transaction records, etc. We were using the HP-95X before that, and the Tandy 102 even earlier. The Palm was a sexy modern alternative to those clunky platforms.
