Now that I live in Europe, I occasionally work with Turks (who haven't heard about it - or about the Aussie war buffs who make the trek out to Turkey to celebrate ANZAC day at the landing site.) What the hell was Australia doing invading Turkey in 1915? "Churchill believed the invasion would give the British a clear sea route to their ally Russia." [1] What's the LOTR version of that? Gandalf showing up and telling the Hobbits to launch an all-out invasion of Harad, to clear the route between Gondor and its ally Isengard? > Tolkien knew whereof he wrote. A veteran of World War I, he watched with dismay the approach of a second great conflagration. Sipping pints of bitter and puffing his pipe in “The Shire” — his idealized Middle England This American opinion piece can idolise Tolkien idolising England. But since America has actually been at war with England, maybe that's not worth much.
