And yet civilization still exists.
- harimau777 3y agoThe article isn't saying that civilization won't exists. It's saying that there could be a disaster on the scale of previous disasters such as the Civil War or early industrialization. Notably, there have been numerous cases where a disaster wiped out a given society even if other societies still existed or replaced it.
- ImHereToVote 3y agoI think the person you are replying to isn't too concerned with millions or billions of casualties. I may be wrong though.
- ThrowawayTestr 3y agoI take issue with this notion that matrix multiplication will lead to billions of deaths.
- reducesuffering 3y agoI take issue with this notion that sky carbon will lead to millions of deaths. I take issue with this notion that microscopic chain reactions could lead to billions of deaths.
- ThrowawayTestr 3y agoThere's is hard evidence for both of these claims. There is no evidence that AI will magically learn how to control the world's factories and turn us all into paperclips.
- reducesuffering 3y agoThen say that to make your case. Infantilizing the argument to matrix multiplication only makes it look silly and unconstructive. Social media is a bunch of registers being added to, doesn’t mean it doesn’t have insanely impactful effects to the real world.
- ImHereToVote 3y agoLook at this guy. Thinking that a bunch of database entries can alter society. What a loon.
- harimau777 3y agoOnce again, the article is not saying that. The article is saying that AI could (and appears to be) having a dramatic impact on society. In the past, similar dramatic changes have caused civilization altering disasters. Therefore, we cannot dismiss the possibility that AI will cause a civilization altering disaster.

- ThrowawayTestr 3y agoAI doomers act like it's an existential threat to all of humanity. And as I said, we are still here.
