CoreData is an object graph and persistence framework. It is more like an ORM toolkit than like a database engine. Indeed, SQLite is one of the possible 'backends', but it is not limited to SQLite. It also supports XML, binary, and in-memory stores out of the box, and you can also create your own if none of those suit.
