Elon Musk is fighting Australia to host a stabbing video on X
- al_borland 3y agoThe title of this article seems to try and lead the reader to the conclusion that Musk is the bad guy here. He isn't fighting to host stabbing videos, he is fighting against censorship. The particular video in question is a stabbing, but if Australia wins here, there is no doubt they will keep adding to the list of things they find "harmful". That's a very broad term. I should turn the filter for my Twitter account back on and see what the feed is like. It's pretty bad right now. On a fresh account, I turned it off and mostly get shown fight videos, although there are some stabbings and other things mixed in. It's probably 80% degenerates / conspiracy theorists. I'm curious how much of that the filter will clean up. I think the best way to solve this isn't with censorship, but with elimination of the feed of random content that I, as a user, never chose to follow. I'm following and handful of people in tech, yet the "For You" page is people getting beat up every 5th post. Maybe the "For You" page shouldn't be a random mix of posts that serve to outrage people, but rather posts from people that a user's following list is following. This will allow a user to branch out and discover new things that they are probably interested in, rather than a bunch of nonsense that will haunt their dreams, all while avoiding censorship.

- RcouF1uZ4gsC 3y ago> On Monday, the Australian eSafety Commission argued that geoblocking did not meet the definition of removal of the footage under the Online Safety Act, which gives Commissioner Julie Inman Grant power to order the removal of materials that “promotes, incites, instructs in or depicts abhorrent violent conduct, such as kidnapping, rape, torture, murder, attempted murder and terrorist acts” if it could “go viral and cause significant harm to the Australian community.” We do not want to give one person the authority to be able to censor the global internet for everyone. I hope Elon Musk wins.
