- mopsi 3y agoNobody was doing that until Russia invaded Ukraine in 2014. Europe was unilaterally disarming itself. Armies like Bundeswehr saw a 5x-10x reduction in manpower, artillery, tanks and other weapons between the end of the Cold War and 2014. Europe hosted 5000 US tanks in 1980s. The last one left in 2013. Russia invaded Ukraine the next year.

- piva00 3y agoSo you are saying it's justified the current invasion of Ukraine by Russia?

- mopsi 3y agoNothing to do with belief. The facts about post-Cold War European disarmament are public and well known. German army had 335 200 soldiers, 3826 tanks and 2136 IFVs in 1980. By 2015, the numbers were down to 61 312 soldiers, 225 tanks and 406 IFVs. Same story elsewhere in Europe too, but not in Russia. Russia has been modernizing their armed forces since early 2000s and is currently expanding them by forming two new armies that have a larger size than the ground forces of most European countries COMBINED. That's why the mood has completely changed in Europe. Russia is preparing for even larger war against Europe.
- phantompeace 3y agoI thought you were talking about Israel there, until the 34 million bit.

- everdrive 3y agoThe fact that Russia invades countries for no reason other than territorial expansion and aggression is the exact reason people feel the need to build defenses. You'll notice that no one is particularly afraid of invasion from other countries.
- boffinAudio 2y ago> build defenses Um, the Russians are building defenses. Take close note of their captured territory - this is the buffer zone that they think they need, whether you agree or not, to safeguard themselves from NATO forces they do not trust one bit. And, given NATO's war crimes over the last twenty years, that distrust is entirely warranted from the perspective of anyone capable of objectively looking at the map of world war and calamity, so far this century [0]... > no one is particularly afraid of invasion from other countries The Syrian people are not exactly throwing roses at the armed forces which occupy 1/3rd of their sovereign territory (the oil fields), which is clearly intended to deny them the resources they need to rebuild their state... Afghanistan didn't particularly like being invaded and occupied for twenty years.. Iraq is still resisting its invaders.. Yemen is fighting for its own territorial sovereignty against a known fascist totalitarian-authoritarian dictatorship which is being armed and supported militarily by .. you know who .. The world is not visible through one set of lenses. You have to wear them all to understand. I don't justify the Russian invasion of Ukraine - but I can certainly understand why the Russians think they can justify it, in light of the hate-filled rhetoric that has been leveled against them for decades, by .. you know who .. Would you tolerate it, as an American, if Russia put secret weapons-related bio-research facilities on your borders along Mexico, and if Mexico had structured its armed forces to be aligned with Russian military planners, preparing to "contain and control" the USA? I don't think so. Anyway, none of this changes the fact that these wars utterly suck, there is too much money being made in the slaughter of men on both sides, and we, the people, are powerless to do anything effective about the failing world diplomatic efforts while we continue to be willfully ruled by our own war criminals and overlook their very real, heinous crimes, just because "they are on 'our' side"...
