- incomingpain 3y ago>That’s forced her to grapple with the economic implications of climate change, which is having increasingly heavy effects on many of the world’s poor. Lets put climate change aside for a second. If the rich world could pull the rest of the world out of poverty. It should do it. https://ourworldindata.org/extreme-poverty-in-brief https://ourworldindata.org/extreme-poverty-in-brief Which we have. We have almost entirely eliminated extreme poverty and are now moving the goal posts to aim for even loftier goals. Huge success. How did we do this? Burning fossil fuels is the correct answer. We are pulling the world out of extreme poverty and the people who are politically against this, 'extinction rebellion' types are against raising people out of poverty. These people are all wealthy rich people who are arguing to keep poor people poor. There's 0 extinction rebellion activists in Africa or Asia. The idea that we should stop burning fossil fuels and start reversing poverty for these poor countries is a laughable proposal at best, immoral and evil in reality. Africa/Asia simply won't let you harm their future by shutting off fossil fuels. China has thousands of coal powered plants in operation and another thousand under construction with intent to operate for decades to come. There's literally no chance they are going to give these up and return those people to poverty. If some group attempts to stop them from operating coal plants, that group will be killed. South Africa is going to lead most of africa into building coal power plants in the coming decades. You can expect thousands more coal plants all over africa within our lifetime. The moral debt we have is 0. Our moral credit/goals are to certainly getting clean renewable electricity to the entire world.
- peteradio 3y agoNo disagreement on your main points. But coal could be a choke point. China already is increasing coal imports significantly.
